Not sure which Windows build you have? Open Settings → System → About and read “System type”

Install

Labels below match the app’s interface, which is available in Simplified Chinese and English

  1. Open the downloaded .dmg, drag Computer Use to Applications, then open it from there

  2. Open Settings from the menu-bar icon. On the Status page, request Accessibility and Screen Recording, allow Computer Use in System Settings, then quit and reopen the app

  3. Optional, for manual terminal use: on the General page, choose “Install in ~/.local/bin…” and add that folder to your PATH so computer-use works in Terminal

zsh
export PATH="$HOME/.local/bin:$PATH"

Prefer a terminal?

With Node.js 22+, the npm launcher finds or verifies and installs the official app, then prints a setup prompt for your agent. System permissions and the first pairing approval still happen in the app

terminal
npx @starroy/computer-use setup
# or
pnpm dlx @starroy/computer-use setup

Connect your agent

The quickest route is the setup prompt. The app only copies it: the prompt holds local path hints, never credentials, and the app does not touch your agent’s settings or Skill folder

  1. In the app, open Settings → Connect and copy the installation prompt

  2. Paste it into your agent. It fetches the Skill, installs it in its own way and checks the connection. When it asks to pair, approve the request in the app; new pairings cover all desktop apps

  3. Ask for a read-only task first, such as the prompt below, and confirm you get a real window screenshot before letting it type or click

A safe first task
Use computer-use to check the connection, list authorized windows, open a session for the test window, capture and describe its screenshot, then close the session. Do not click or type during this task

Generating the prompt neither pairs nor starts anything. System permissions and the first pairing are always approved by you, locally, in the app

Set up by hand with the CLI or MCP

Use this for a restricted scope, a named profile or an agent without Skill support. Run the commands in a terminal; on Windows, from the install folder

Pair, then approve the request in the app. The default scope is all desktop apps. Add --app <id> to restrict it, or --all-apps --browser to include the isolated browser too

zsh
computer-use pair --profile default --name 'My Agent'

Open a plain, non-elevated app with a blank test document (TextEdit on macOS), then check the connection and list its window

zsh
computer-use doctor --profile default
computer-use targets --profile default

Print the configuration for your agent and add it to the agent’s MCP settings. Other agents can use computer-use config stdio --profile default for generic JSON

zsh
computer-use config codex --profile default

The generated configuration contains launch paths and a profile name, not credentials. Computer Use never edits your agent’s configuration

Verify your download

Every ZIP, DMG and installer has a .sha256 file next to it on the release page. Compare it before you run anything

macOS, in the folder holding both files:

zsh
shasum -a 256 -c computer-use-0.7.0-macos-arm64.dmg.sha256

Windows PowerShell:

PowerShell
Get-FileHash .\computer-use-0.7.0-windows-x64-setup.exe -Algorithm SHA256
Get-Content .\computer-use-0.7.0-windows-x64-setup.exe.sha256

Updates and uninstalling

  • Computer Use checks GitHub for a new stable release once a day (you can turn this off) and verifies every download against the release’s SHA-256 and metadata. No usage data is sent

  • macOS: signed releases update in one step and keep your permissions and paired clients

  • Windows: an installed copy downloads the new installer for you to run; a portable copy downloads a verified ZIP for you to swap in

  • Uninstall: on macOS, quit the app and delete it; on Windows, use Settings → Apps. Pairing data and logs stay in your user folder (~/Library/Application Support/Computer Use and ~/.config/computer-use on macOS, %LOCALAPPDATA%\Computer Use on Windows); delete them if you no longer need them
